Video archives: prepare a broker-ready dataset brief

Describe distinct recordings, derived clips, transcripts, subject coverage, and review boundaries before a broker pitches an archive.

Use this guide to describe a bounded collection and decide what evidence an intermediary needs next. It does not establish buyer acceptance, a valuation, or permission to license the material.

Separate recordings from derived clips

Count original recordings, derived clips, and total duration independently. Preserve recording identifiers and clip start/end times. Ten overlapping clips from one scene do not represent ten independent scenes; explain overlap so the intermediary can describe the collection accurately.

Inventory audio and transcript alignment

State which recordings have audio, which have transcripts, and whether timestamps align at recording or clip level. Separate machine-generated transcripts from reviewed text and note languages, missing audio, and known synchronization issues. Do not pay to transcribe the full archive until the buyer explains its evaluation needs.

Map review questions by component

Track the source of footage, music, graphics, and supplied inserts separately. Identify unresolved questions involving people, locations, confidentiality, and proposed uses for appropriate review. A release or permission for one production purpose should not be assumed to settle another use; get qualified advice for the actual transaction.

Ask for a bounded evidence request

Start with subject counts, capture context, a metadata schema, and an example made without actual footage. Ask which actions, viewpoints, languages, and time ranges matter. Prepare only an approved subset when the evaluator names a review process and decision date.
