AI data broker vs marketplace vs direct outreach
Compare who finds prospects, qualifies buyers, negotiates scope, and handles delivery across three ways to explore a business dataset sale.
Choose a route by the work you need help with. “Broker” and “marketplace” do not tell you which responsibilities a particular provider accepts. The distinctions below are a comparison framework; confirm each service in writing.
When an intermediary may help
An intermediary may be useful when you need help defining prospects, running qualification, or coordinating an introduction. First ask which of those tasks it actually performs and who pays it. A contact introduction alone leaves technical evaluation, rights review, negotiation, and delivery with the parties unless separately agreed.
When a marketplace may fit
A marketplace can provide a listing and inquiry workflow, but the seller still needs to understand eligibility, fees, and its own responsibilities. Datarade’s provider application, for example, describes listing and inquiry tools and requires a legally registered business with rights to commercialize the data. That example does not mean every archive will be accepted or find a buyer.
When direct outreach may fit
If you already know a relevant organization and can explain a specific task your collection might support, direct contact may avoid an intermediary relationship. Your team must still find the right evaluator, handle follow-up, and agree the commercial and sharing boundaries. Time spent by internal staff belongs in the comparison even when no commission is quoted.
Choose the smallest useful next step
Use an existing nonconfidential description to ask what information a route needs for qualification. Compare the named responsibilities and total costs before commissioning a full export. If your own dataset boundary is unclear, start with one of the five preparation briefs. None of these routes guarantees a buyer.
| Work | Intermediary | Marketplace | Direct outreach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find prospects | Ask for mandate and access evidence | Review discovery and inquiry features | Your team identifies contacts |
| Qualify a buyer | Confirm who checks task and authority | Do not equate an account with qualification | Your team runs discovery |
| Prepare and review data | Confirm paid scope and owner | Check publishing requirements | Your team arranges preparation |
| Negotiate and deliver | Assign each responsibility explicitly | Check platform versus seller duties | Parties agree the process |
| Compare costs | Retainer, commission, internal work | Subscription, transaction fees, internal work | Internal work and outside support |
